Hey Language Teachers!
Hey Language Teachers!
Looking for a way to share lesson content with your students outside the classroom and language lab? Want to keep your students engaged? Want to do something about the encroachment of language apps like Duolingo and Rosetta Stone?
Introducing “Declan Channels” – a great way for language teachers and schools to share course content with students on their mobile devices.
The world is increasingly moving to mobile, especially for this generation of our students. This is especially true in the domain of education. Foreign language teachers, schools and institutions are looking for ways to keep students engaged outside the classroom and language lab, and going mobile is the obvious way forward. This is particularly relevant in the face of the massive take up of mobile language learning apps like Duolingo and Rosetta Stone and the challenge they pose to traditional language schools and faculties.
Declan Channels is a Content Sharing Framework (CSF) that allows foreign language teachers, schools and institutions to offer bespoke course-specific content which can be shared with students on their mobile devices using the free Declan Channels App. Declan Channels is able to handle any language pair, in either direction.

Stephen Krashen’s Theory of Second Language Acquisition
Language acquisition does not require extensive use of conscious grammatical rules, and does not require tedious drill.
Stephen Krashen, Professor Eemeritus at the University of Southern California
Acquisition requires meaningful interaction in the target language – natural communication – in which speakers are concerned not with the form of their utterances but with the messages they are conveying and understanding.

Typing accented letters on the iPhone
Declan FlashCards’ spelling exercises require typing accented letters for many of the available languages including Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese. This is very simple to do on the iPhone/iPad, even without installing a language specific keyboard.
Just press and hold the corresponding non-accented letter and a pop-up showing all the possible accented versions of that letter will appear. Now just drag your finger to the accented letter you want and release.
Here is a video illustrating this for the Spanish accented letter ‘í ‘ in the word ‘sí ‘
“And that honestly changed my life”
When I was 15, I spent a month working on an archeological dig. I was talking to one of the archeologists one day during our lunch break and he asked those kinds of “getting to know you” questions you ask young people: Do you play sports? What’s your favorite subject? And I told him, no I don’t play any sports. I do theatre, I’m in choir, I play the violin and piano, I used to take art classes.
And he went WOW. That’s amazing! And I said, “Oh no, but I’m not any good at ANY of them.”
And he said something then that I will never forget and which absolutely blew my mind because no one had ever said anything like it to me before: “I don’t think being good at things is the point of doing them. I think you’ve got all these wonderful experiences with different skills, and that all teaches you things and makes you an interesting person, no matter how well you do them.”
And that honestly changed my life. Because I went from a failure, someone who hadn’t been talented enough at anything to excel, to someone who did things because I enjoyed them. I had been raised in such an achievement-oriented environment, so inundated with the myth of Talent, that I thought it was only worth doing things if you could “Win” at them.
