Adverbs before the verb using 地 (de)

In Chinese, there are two common adverbial modifier particles: and - both pronounced 'de'.

These are both used to link adjectives or adverbs to verbs

Which one is used depends on whether the adverb/adjective appears before or after the verb.

In this topic we illustrate the use of the modifier (de).

To form an adverb using we use the pattern: [adjective] + + [verb]

Examples:
她开心地笑。
tā kāixīn de xiào.
She laughs happily.

开心 ('happy') + 'happily'

她认真地听。
tā rènzhēn de tīng.
She listens attentively.

认真 ('attentive') + 'attentively'

他大声地说话。
tā dàshēng de shuōhuà.
He speaks loudly.

大声 ('loud' + 'loudly'

她温柔地说话。
tā wēnróu de shuōhuà.
She speaks gently.

温柔 ('gentle') + 'gently'

温柔 (wēnróu) means 'gentle'

他小心地开车。
tā xiǎoxīn de kāichē.
He drives carefully.

小心 ('careful') + 'carefully'

小心 (xiǎoxīn) means 'careful' or 'cautious'

我们热情地欢迎客人。
wǒmen rèqíng de huānyíng kèrén.
We warmly welcome the guests.

热情 (rèqíng) means 'enthusiasm'

欢迎 (huānyíng) means 'welcome'

客人 (kèrén) means 'guest' or 'visitor'

他安静地看书。
tā ānjìng de kànshū.
He reads quietly.

安静 ('quiet') + 'quietly'

我们快速地跑。
wǒmen kuàisù de pǎo.
We run quickly.

快速 ('quick') + 'quickly'

快速 (kuàisù) means 'quick'

她小心地打开门。
tā xiǎoxīn de dǎkāi mén.
She carefully opens the door.

小心 ('careful') + 'carefully'

他轻轻地敲门。
tā qīngqīng de qiāo mén.
He gently knocks on the door.

轻轻 ('gentle') + 'gently'

轻轻 (qīngqīng) means 'gentle'

她热情地欢迎客人。
tā rèqíng de huānyíng kèrén.
She warmly welcomes the guests.

热情 ('warm') + 'warmly'

他轻松地完成任务。
tā qīngsōng de wánchéng rènwù.
He easily completes the task.

轻松 ('easy') + 'easily'

我们愉快地玩耍。
wǒmen yúkuài de wánshuǎ.
We happily play.

她激动地宣布消息。
tā jīdòng de xuānbù xiāoxi.
She excitedly announces the news.
