In Chinese, the pattern 虽然 (suīrán)...但是 (dànshì) can be used to express a contrary outcome. It gives contrast or contradiction between two clauses. This is like using 'although…' or 'despite...' and 'nevertheless' in English. Note that 可是 (kěshì) can be used in place of 但是 and is more colloquial and less formal. |
