Lots of, a little of - beaucoup de & un peu de

The word beaucoup means 'a lot' or 'many' and when it is used to quantify a noun it needs de.

Whether we use de or des depends on whether we need a definite article to talk about something that has already been specified. If so then we use des ('of the'). Recall that des comes from de + les.

There are many other quantifiers like beaucoup de. These include:

• un peu de = 'not much of'

-- un petit peu de is very common - 'a little bit of'

• trop de = 'too much of'

• assez de = 'enough of'

• plus de = 'more of'

• peu de = 'few of' or 'not much of' with a nuance of 'a lack of' or 'insufficient'

Examples:
	Il y a beaucoup d'eau dans la carafe. There is a lot of water in the carafe.
	J'ai beaucoup de temps. I have plenty of time.
	Il y a trop de personnes dans le bus, n'est-ce pas ? There are too many people on the bus, aren't there?
	Il n'y a pas beaucoup de grands arbres dans le parc. There are not many tall trees in the park. Negative so require the partitive de
	Tu as assez d'amis. You (familiar) have enough friends.
	Je n'ai pas assez d'argent. I do not have enough money.
	Est-ce qu'il y a encore de cidre dans cette bouteille ? Is there more cider in this bottle?
	Oui, il y a un peu de cidre dans la bouteille. Yes, there is a little cider in the bottle.
	Y a-t-il trop de sucre dans votre thé ? Is there is too much sugar in your (formal) tea?
	Je veux plus de cette bière. I want more of that beer.
	J'ai peu d'argent. I have little (insufficient) money.
	Elle veut juste un petit peu de lait dans son café. She wants just a little bit of milk in her coffee. un petit peu is very common - 'a little bit' juste means 'just' or 'only' or 'fair' or 'justified'
	Elle a peu de lait dans son café. She has little (not enough) milk in her coffee. content (m) means 'glad' or 'pleased' or 'satisfied'
	Malheureusement, j'ai peu d'argent en ce moment. Unfortunately I have little (insufficient) money at the moment. malheureusement means 'unfortunately'
	Peu des gens qui sont ici sont suédois. (Too) few of the people who are here are Swedish. les gens have been specified so use des (of the) suédois (m) means 'Swedish'
	Trop des gens qui sont dans la boîte de nuit sont jeunes. Too many of the people in the nightclub are young. des gens because 'the people who are in the night club' has ben specified
	Beaucoup des plats qui sont sur la table sont épicés. Many of the dishes on the table are spicy. des plats because 'the dishes' have been specified - those on the table.
	Beaucoup des poissons qui sont dans le filet sont petits. Many of the fish in the net are small. filet (f) means 'net' les poissons have been specified so use des (of the)
	Beaucoup des idées de Jean_Luc sont intéressantes. Many of Jean-Luc's ideas are interesting. les idées have been specified so use des (of the)
