The irregular imparfait of être

The verb être is the only truely irregular verb in the imparfait.

• j'étais - 'I was'

• tu étais - 'you (familiar) was'

• il était & elle était - 'he was' and 'she was'

• nous étions - 'we were'

• vous étiez - 'you (pural or singular formal) was'

• ils étaient & elles étaient - 'they were' and 'they (females) were'

The verb avoir is regular in l'imparfait.

Examples:
	Enfant, j'étais souvent malade. As a child I was often sick.
	Quand nous étions en Suisse, nous skiions souvent. When we were in Switzerland, we often skied.
	J'étais au supermarché toute la matinée. I was at the supermarket all morning.
	Tu n'étais pas prêt à partir avant lui. You (familiar) weren't ready to leave before he was.
	Leur réponse était décourageante. Their response was discouraging.
	Je sais que vous étiez à Montpellier l'été dernier. I know you (formal) were in Montpellier last summer.
	Les fenêtres étaient déjà ouvertes quand nous sommes arrivés. The windows were already open when we arrived.
	Il était étudiant quand il s'est marié. He was a student when he got married.
	C'était le plus beau jour de ma vie. It was the best day of my life.
	Ils étaient les meilleurs amis pendant leur temps à l'armée. They were best friends during their time in the military.
	Je ne sais pas qui c'était, mais ce n'était pas moi. I don't know who it was but it wasn't me.
