Except, without - 빼(놓)고

The connector 빼놓고 between two nouns are used to say 'except' or 'without'.

-- The 놓 is often dropped to leave just 빼고.

The sense of 빼(놓)고 is of exclusion and not, as in the case of 말고, replacement or substitution.

-- The 빼 in this connector comes from 빼다 which means 'to remove' or 'to take out'

It is not uncommon to attach the contrastive marker 은/는 to both 빼고 for extra emphasis.

This connector is related to the verb 빼놓다 which means 'to leave out', 'to omit' or 'to exclude' so the sense is 'after leaving out'.

Examples:
	여기는 이십이번을 빼고는 모든 버스가 다 와요. All buses stop (come) here except for number twenty two.
	비행기를 타는 것을 빼고는 저는 아무것도 두려워하지 않아요. Except for taking planes, I'm not afraid of anything.
	희영이만 빼고 소풍을 갈 수는 없어요. (I) can't go on a picnic without Heeyoung.
	재만 빼놓고 다들 어디 갔을까요? Where has everyone gone without me?
	이 색깔만 빼고 나머지는 다 잘 어울립니다. Except for this colour, everything else goes well together.
	김치를 빼놓고 한국을 이야기할 수는 없습니다. (You) cannot talk about Korea without mentioning kimchi.
