Instead of, rather than - 말고

Pattern: Noun + 말고 + Noun

The connector 말고 between two nouns is used to say 'instead of' or 'rather than'

The sense of 말고 is of replacement and not simply exclusion.

It is not uncommon to attach the contrastive marker 은/는 to 말고 for extra emphasis.

Unlike 밖에 this connectors are used with positive statements.

Examples:
	사과 말고 배를 주세요. Give me a pear, instead of an apple.
	이거 말고 저거 주세요. Give me that one, not this one.
	소영이 말고 채영이가 당신에게 전화를 걸었어요. Not Soyoung, but Chaeyoung called you. 전화를 걸다 means 'to make a telephone call'
	이 책 말고 저 책을 찾고 있나요? Are you looking for that book other than this one?
	오늘 말고 내일 서류를 제출하세요. Submit your documents tomorrow, not today.
	이거 말고 더 큰 사이즈는 없나요? Is there a bigger size other than this one? 사이즈 is commonly used but 크기 is also be used
	그 학생은 영어 말고 한국어를 잘하는 편입니다. The student is fluent in Korean, not English. 잘하는 편이다 means 'to be comfortable doing something' or 'to do something well'
	다섯 시 말고 다섯 시 삼십 분에 그 커피숍에서 만나자. Let's meet at the coffee shop at five thirty instead of at five. informal
	저는 비서 말고 사장님과 직접 대화할 거에요. Instead of the secretary, I will talk directly with the boss. 직접 means 'directly' or 'in person' 대화하다 means 'to converse' or 'to talk'
	이 파란 셔츠 말고 저 노란색 셔츠로 주세요. Not this blue shirt, but please give (me) that yellow shirt.
	우리 커피 말고 차를 마실까요? Shall we drink tea instead of coffee.
	그 사람 말고 민수 씨하고 가고 싶어요. I want to go with Minsu instead of that person.
	저 말고 다른 사람한테 얘기하지 마세요. Don’t tell anyone but me.
	이 색깔 말고 다른 색은 없어요? Don't you have another colour besides this colour?
	커피 말고 홍차 주세요. Not coffee, please give (me) black tea.
	가을이 왔으니까 딸기 말고 호박을 살게요. It’s fall now so instead of strawberries (I) will buy pumpkin. 호박 means 'pumpkin'
	치킨 말고 피자 시켜 먹자. Instead of chicken, let’s order pizza. informal
	영화를 보는 것 말고 할 일이 아무것도 없어요. There’s nothing to do here except watch movies. Here the verb 보다 (to see, to watch) is turned into a noun 보는 것
	걸어 다니는 것 말고는 다른 운동은 안 해요. Apart from walking around (he) doesn’t do any exercise. 걸어다니다 (to walk around) is turned into a noun 걸어다니는 것 말고 has the contrastive marker 는 attached for emphasis.
