Reported or Indirect speech (Part III)

We saw previously that /는다고 is used when reporting a statement of an action verb and 다고 for a descriptive verb.

Different endings are used in the following cases:

라고 - Asking questions in quoted sentences.

라고 - with the verb 이다 (to be)

라고 - with the future tense pattern () 것이다

냐고 - Reporting a question

자고 - Reporting a proposal/suggestion.

라고 - reporting a demand or order.

-- The verb 시키다 (to order) is often used with 라고

Examples:
저는 우리 팀이 이길 거라고 믿어요.
I believe that our team will win.

거라고 for the future tense

밥을 많이 먹을 수 있는 사람들을 식신이라고 불러요.
People who can eat a lot are called (said to be) '식신'.

라고 with the verb 이다 (to be)

내일 캐나다에 갈 거라고요?
(You said that) you’re going to Canada tomorrow?

거라고 for the future tense

저는 밥을 먹을 거라고 했어요.
I said that (I) will eat.

거라고 for the future tense

그 사람은 선생님이라고 들었어요.
(I) heard that this person is a teacher.

라고 with the verb 이다 (to be)

그 사람한테 하지 말라고 했어요!
(I) told him to stop doing it!

말라고 for 'said not to'

뭐라고 했어요?
What did (you) say?

라고 for asking questions in quoted sentences.

누구냐고 물어봤어요.
(I) asked who (he) is.

냐고 for reporting a question asked

그놈이 잘 지내냐고 물었어요.
That guy asked (me) how (I) was doing.

냐고 for reporting a question asked

means 'guy' or 'fellow' or 'bloke' - can be derogatory.

뭐라고 했어요?
What did (you) ask?

라고 for asking questions in quoted sentences.

저는 그에게 수영할 수 있느냐고 물어봤어요.
I asked him if (he) could swim.

냐고 for reporting a question asked

친구에게 집 앞에서 만나자고 말했어요.
(I) told (my) friends to meet in front of the house.

자고 for reporting a proposal or suggestion

여자 친구가 공원에 가자고 했어요.
My girlfriend suggested (we) go to the park.

자고 for reporting a proposal or suggestion

선생님이 수업 시간 동안 열심히 공부하자고 했어요.
The teacher suggested that (we) study hard during class time.

자고 for reporting a proposal or suggestion

집에 빨리 가라고 했어요.
(I) told (you) to go home quickly.

라고 for reporting a order

그에게 전화해서 곧 오라고 할게요.
(I) will call him and tell him to come soon.

라고 for reporting a order

그 사람이 유명한 분이라고 들었어요.
(I) heard that person is famous.

라고 with the verb 이다 (to be)

한국 문화에 대한 책이라고 했어요.
(I) said it was a book about Korean culture.

라고 with the verb 이다 (to be)

그 사람한테 하지 말라고 했어요!
(I) told him to stop doing it!

라고 for reporting a order

그녀의 여동생은 그녀에게 울지 말라고 했어요.
Her younger sister told her not to cry.

라고 for reporting a order

병원에서 식사를 한 후에 약을 먹으라고 했어요.
(I was told) from (by) the hospital to take the medicine after meals.

라고 for reporting a order

영어 선생님은 그 학생에게 서류를 가져오라고 시키셨어요.
The English teacher told the student to bring the paper.

라고 for reporting a order

그 남자가 개에게 공을 가져오라고 시켰나요?
Did the man order the dog to fetch the ball?

라고 for reporting a order

그 경찰은 나에게 차를 오른쪽으로 대라고 시켰다.
The cop ordered me to pull the car to the right.
