Talking about durations of time

A duration of time can be added to a phrase simply by appending a duration - all in the nominative case.

Note there are three words for 'year' in Russian: год, года and лет.

• год is used with the number 1 and numbers ending in 1.

• года is used with the numbers 2,3 and 4. And numbers ending there with.

• лет is used with all other numbers (5 to 19) including 0 and numbers ending with 0.

The verb занимать / занять literally means 'to take' and can be used to express duration.

The verb длиться / продлиться means 'to last' or 'to endure' and can also be used to express duration.

Examples:
	Я жил в Париже десять лет. I (male) lived in Paris for ten years.
	Я жил в Лондоне два года. I (male) lived in London for two years.
	Мы просидели в парке два часа. We sat in the park for two hours.
	Концерт длился три часа. The concert lasted three hours.
	Почему встреча длилась так долго? Why did the meeting last so long?
	Я жил в Париже два года назад. I (male) lived in Paris two years ago.
	Я работаю здесь двадцать один год. I have worked here for twenty-one years. Note the use of the simnple present tense in place of the English past perfect.
	Это заняло три года. It took three years. занять (perfective) ⇒ заняло (past tense, neuter)
	Это занимает много времени. It is taking a long time. занимать (imperfective) ⇒ (оно) занимает
	Операция не заняла много времени. The operation did not take long. занять (perfective) ⇒ заняла (past tense, fem.)
	Это длилось так долго, что я заснул. It was lasting/taking so long that I fell asleep. длиться (imperfective) ⇒ (оно) длилось
	Сколько времени длилась эта боль? How long did this pain last? Imperfective (длиться) is used to emphasise that pain lasted some time.
	Боль продлилась недолго. The pain lasted a short time. Perfective (продлиться) is used to emphasise that pain end.
	Встреча длилась около трёх часов. The meeting lasted about three hours.
	Сколько длится этот фильм? How long does this movie last?
	Дорога до школы занимает около десяти минут. The way (road) to school takes about ten minutes. This is the common way to say 'It takes me..'+B2667 to get somewhere.
	Он разговаривал с кем-то по телефону не менее часа. He was talking to someone on the phone for at least one hour. не менее means 'no less than' note that в has been omitted.
	Дорога до Ярославля заняла более двух часов. The drive (road) to (the city of) Yaroslav took over two hours. более means 'more than' note that в has been omitted.
	Работа продолжалась до ноября. The work lasted until November.
