The Genitive case - Plurals

Forming the genitive for plurals is not easy. Starting with the nominative singular:

• Masculine ending in a consonant - add «-oв»

• Masculine ending in «-й» - replace with «-ев»

• Masculine one-syllable nouns like край & чай - replace «-й» with «-ёв»

• Masculine ending in «-ь», replace with «-ей»

• Masculine ending with «-ж», «-ч», «-ш», «-щ» - add «-ей»

• Masculine ending in «-а», «-я» lose their endings.

• Masculine exceptions include брат, лист which append «-ьев».

• Feminine ending in «-а» and «-я» lose their endings.

• Feminine ending in «-ь» - replace with «-ей»

• Neuter ending in «-e» - replace with «-eй»

• Neuter ending in «-o» remove the «-o» but often a vowel is reinserted to make pronunciation easier.

• Neuter ending in «-ие» - replace with «-ий»

Examples:
	У учителей нет времени. The teachers don't have time. учителя (masc. singular) ⇒ (у) учителей (у takes the genitive)
	У учителя пока нет учеников. The teacher does not yet have any students. ученик (masc. singular) ⇒ (нет) учеников (absence requires the genitive)
	Это большой город без музеев. It is a big city without museums. музей (masc. singular) ⇒ (без) музеев (без takes the genitive)
	Это небольшой городок без трамваев. It is a small town without trams. трамвай (masc. singular) ⇒ (без) трамваев (без takes the genitive)
	У неё нет краев. She does not have edges. край (masc. singular) ⇒ (нет) краев (absence requires the genitive)
	Это подарки учителей. These are teachers' gifts. учитель (masc. singular) ⇒ учителей (possession requires the genitive)
	У меня нет газет в офисе. I don't have newspapers in the office. (нет) газета (fem. singular) ⇒ (нет) газет (absence requires the genitive)
	У меня нет дочерей. I do not have daughters. дочь (fem. singular) ⇒ (нет) дочерей (absence requires the genitive)
	Сегодня у студентов нет собрания. Today the students don’t have a meeting. студент (masc. singular) ⇒ (у) студентов (у takes the genitive)
	У неё нет братьев. She does not have any brothers. брат (masc. singular) ⇒ (нет) братьев (absence requires the genitive)
	Дом без окон — это странно. A building without windows - that is strange. окно (neu. singular) ⇒ (без) окон (без takes the genitive)
	Здание без дверей — это очень странно. A building without doors - that is very strange. дверь (fem. singular) ⇒ (без) дверей (без takes the genitive)
	В этом году на даче у нас нет яблок. This year at the dacha we do not have apples. (нет) яблоко (neu. singular) ⇒ (нет) яблок (absence requires the genitive)
	У повара нет ножей. The cook has no knives. нож (masc. singular) ⇒ (нет) ножей (absence requires the genitive)
	Истории без концов. Stories without endings. конец (masc. singular) ⇒ (без) концов (без takes the genitive)
	Рыба из морей. Fish out of the seas. море (neu. singular) ⇒ (из) морей (из takes the genitive)
	Вчера на небе не было облаков. Yesterday there were no clouds in the sky. облако (neu. singular) ⇒ (не было) облаков (absence requires the genitive)
	В этом районе нет ресторанов. There are no restaurants in this neighbourhood. ресторан (masc. singular) ⇒ (нет) ресторанов (absence requires the genitive)
	Не было фруктов в магазине. There was no fruit(s) in the shop. фрукт (masc. singular) ⇒ (не было) фруктов (absence requires the genitive)
